03 — About

Two kinds of sacred listening.

Amaya Noelle Kurose-Bell, known as Amaya Kurose, was born in Yokosuka, Japan, to a Black American Navy sonar technician and a Japanese jazz pianist, and raised in Norfolk, Virginia.

Sundays meant her father’s Baptist choir. Summers meant Kissa Kuro, her grandfather’s jazz-and-soul listening café in Kure, where nobody spoke while a record played. After he passed in 2022, her video of “Paper Lantern,” sung on his old upright in the empty café, went viral. Then came a shelved record deal and five months of vocal rest. She came back with a self-made EP and, now, KINTSUGI: an album about the gold in the cracks.

“Being half in two places taught me to listen twice. Broken is just the part where the gold goes.”— Amaya Kurose
